As a Global Citizens Fellow, Michael Mychaliska worked with Derechos Humanos Y Diversidad, a non-profit organization based in Buenos Aires that assists vulnerable asylum-seeking populations migrate to Argentina. The services his organization provided ranged from legal counsel to assistance navigating the healthcare system. Michael’s specific roles included conducting check-in’s with beneficiaries, accompanying migrants and their translators to medical appointments, helping to organize language lessons and other responsibilities that arose. In response to his role’s check-in assignment, Michael created a formal survey system to benchmark beneficiary experiences, identifying gaps his organization could fill in the orientation process.

“I found it especially insightful to collaborate with an organization that had very little institutional support, and observe how these circumstances impacted its ability to operate. Seeing how the lack of judicial efficiency, compounded by political change. negatively impacted not only the ability of my organization to operate, but also the morale of migrants and my colleagues, was both challenging but also left me inspired by their fortitude. These observations have caused me to connect how political and other conditions can allow or be an impediment to this work."

Livia Maria Souza Da Silva, ’28 - Rojo Manohisoa in Antsirabe, Madagascar  

Lívia taught the basic level of English to the Malagasy children and teenagers in Antsirabe, Madagascar. For the children, the topics were related to foods, clothes, professions, animals, and basic verbal conjugation. She used games such as crossword and word search to engage them in the learning process. Also, she organized competitions of memorization with English videos in every class to foster their listening skills. When working with teenagers, she taught English topics related to daily situations, such as introductions, buying products, and sharing about their goals. Furthermore, she facilitated leadership workshops for local professionals and young activists, teaching exercises related to self-knowledge and leadership styles.

“The highlight of my teaching experience was the relationship I developed with my students and how we teamed up to make the communication happen. Since neither of us spoke the other’s native language, the basic level of French we had was the bridge in this process. It was very special to see how what could be considered a barrier became an opportunity for my students to actively engage in their learning experience.”

Nate Berg ’27 Through the Global Citizens Fellowship, Nate Berg worked with as an English teacher in Thailand. Volunteer English Bangkok is an NGO dedicated to serving underserved and rural communities across Thailand, and Nate was incredibly fortunate to travel to Bangkok, Krabi, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Sawan, and Ayutthaya while teaching in schools and monasteries. Nate immersed himself in Thai culture and Buddhism while teaching, and worked teaching students ranging in age from three to sixteen. Nate is so grateful to have been awarded the Global Citizens Fellowship, and Thailand has a special place in his heart.

“My summer in Thailand was the experience of a lifetime. Seeing students improve day after day, week after week, was incredibly affirming, and left me with a renewed sense of commitment to the common good. In a completely different culture, kindness and compassion stand out as constants that bind people from all walks of life together. My summer taught me how two people separated by language, customs, and culture, can become friends simply by sharing a meal and a hug.”

Mila Bonometti ’26 spent her summer working with ) in the small town of El Porvenir, Honduras. She spent her days teaching children aged 6-12 at one of the three community locations, providing free lessons to students in a town where public school operates for only half the day. Alongside local interns and other international volunteers, Mila taught English and led activities in other subjects such as Spanish, art, and science. She also spent time teaching English to an evening Adult Class and was involved in HCA’s Healthy Snack Program, Healthy Pet Program, and community outreach activities.

“I felt that building relationships with the people I met, including students, everyone I worked with, and community members, was the most impactful part of my summer. I feel so lucky to have connected with and learned from so many incredible people and I am so fortunate to have a new place in the world that feels like home.”

Lex Davis ’26 worked with an organization in Cusco, Peru. She taught English to 5- and 6-year-olds at the local public school to help them learn basic English vocabulary. She utilized a lot of songs such as Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes. She also worked as a teacher’s assistant at another school, playing with kids and helping prepare material as the teacher taught. Lex was the assistant volleyball coach for young girls in the community. Along with teaching Lex did construction work for the organization to help get a school ready for children to come.

“Just as the kids were learning I was learning alongside them. I feel like this experience helped me gain independence and be able to advocate for my needs better. I will never forget when one of the kids jumped for joy when he found out I was teaching that day, all the hugs, or how much the kids improved each day. It was an amazing experience to immerse myself in a new culture and want to call it home.”

Jimmy Netherton ’26 worked at the with over one hundred children from the Mustang region of Tibet. His days were spent on small projects around the hostel. Some of those small projects were improving the garden, weeding, peeling potatoes, doing dishes, and helping staff with cleaning. When he wasn’t working around the hostel he would help with the kids, whether that be walking with them to and from school, serving them meals, helping them with their homework, or playing with them during their free time. Connecting with the kids and learning about their culture was the highlight of his summer.

“My summer in Nepal was not at all what I originally expected it to be. I learned so much about myself and what really matters to me this summer. I am leaving Nepal with a new outlook on the world around me and a new sense of gratitude for all that I have had the privilege to do in my life.” 

This summer, Luisa Wolcott-Breen ’25 interned at the (NaDEET). The organization works to educate students in primary and secondary schools as well as offering youth programs, creating environmental literacy publications, and training teachers to implement lessons in sustainability. She worked for two weeks at the Desert Centre, where she met secondary school students and participated in activities such as a biodiversity dune walk, star gazing, and solar cooking. She spent the rest of her summer working at NaDEET’s Urban Centre on projects ranging from installing activities in a simulated eco-conscious household to writing a game that challenges participants to make decisions about a sustainable development project.

“My love for environmental education has been reignited through working with NaDEET. I learned alongside students about sustainability in action, and we worked together to think through issues affecting Namibia and the United States. The people working for NaDEET are incredibly knowledgeable about Namibia’s natural resources and sustainable education. I have loved meeting folks who dedicate their lives to helping students learn and making sustainability accessible and fun!”

Astrid Braun ’24 (Philosophy) taught and tutored at , an educational nonprofit in Huaraz, Peru. During the week, Astrid assisted students in completing homework assignments in all subjects before and after school. She spent her afternoons teaching younger students new mathematical concepts, and when students completed all of their coursework, she helped them learn guitar. During both morning and afternoon sessions, Astrid also prepared food for students as part of Seeds of Hope's efforts to provide holistic support to students. Her favorite work with Seeds of Hope was leading field trips — one of which was an overnight camping trip in the Andes mountains! 

"I loved my time working at Seeds of Hope, and I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from my students, the director of the organization, and the other volunteers around me. In addition to improving my Spanish-language and teaching skills, I was fortunate to be able to observe and be a part of a small nonprofit doing a large amount of good work in the community of Huaraz."

Sapphire Hall ’25 went to Ngor, Senegal to teach young black girls and boys English and surfing skills. Throughout the summer she worked with students three times a week teaching English, and basic French grammar and speaking. During this time, she built strong connections with the students and learned some of their native language, Wollof. Sapphire did group surf sessions with older and younger girls. She monitored them in the water, gave them advice, pushed them while in the water, and worked on their popup skills. While teaching surf lessons she was able to learn a lot about her surfing.

"My overall experience was very beautiful and challenging at the same time. Despite the challenges I loved working with my students and I loved the country. My students and I were able to share a lot about our culture. Although there was a small language barrier I was able to sustain beautiful and interesting conversations with my students. I feel confident in my work and I hope I made a long-lasting impact."

Sabrina Kearney ’26 spent the summer in Dharamsala, India working for , an organization that serves the Tibetan community in exile. At Lha, she taught English to a class of thirty students from diverse backgrounds including Tibetan Buddhist monks, nuns, and laypeople from all over South Asia. She also wrote spotlight articles about people in the local community to amplify their stories. Outside of work, she created a painting workshop at a local cafe, attended teachings at the Dalai Lama temple, and studied Tibetan language. 

"I come back from my time in Dharamsala inspired and hopeful for the future. Through connecting deeply with people in the community, I heard many powerful stories and learned the value of compassion in the face of struggle. I feel very lucky to have had such a culturally rich and vibrant home for the past two months, and I hope to return someday."

Phincho Sherpa ’25 worked with  in Senegal. In the mornings, she balanced her time between two things: helping people with money and taking care of those who were hurt. She talked to people who wanted to borrow money and wrote down their ideas for borrowing. Then, in the place where sick people were looked after, she treated the injuries of the talibés, making them feel better. When the sun started to go down, she became a teacher. She taught the older talibés how to speak English by showing them new words and how to make sentences. Sometimes, when they were interested, she also taught them math. At the end of the day, she played games with the younger talibés, ending the day with smiles and fun times together.

"Engaging with talibés' lives firsthand, I've witnessed their resilience and embraced the power of education and care. Through this experience, I've deepened my understanding of community, empathy, and the potential to create positive change together."

Pranav Vadlamudi ’26 (Neuroscience and Philosophy) worked with (HCDP Ghana) - a grassroots NGO based in Akrofu Agorve dedicated to partnering with local leaders to execute rural community health projects. Pranav assisted with some of HCDP Ghana’s projects in partnership with the Ho Teaching Hospital, such as BLS training in a local school and mobile clinics in local rural communities. He also had the opportunity to intern with the Akrofu Health Center and learn more about rural healthcare and disparities abroad following training at HTH, as he worked within the clinic’s OPD, conducted patient intake, and assisted with the clinic’s outreach efforts. Pranav also assisted with English classes at a local school in Gbogame, and he looks forward to grant writing for the organization to initiate more projects.

"'Akpe. Thank you.'
A phrase I commonly hear at the Akrofu Clinic is “akpe.” Behind every pair of eyes that lights up during every akpe, there lies a story. Each day at the clinic, I heard stories from people and what brought them to the clinic. Staying within the community of Akrofu allowed me to recognize the significance of storytelling in addressing the healthcare needs of rural populations. Seeing the providers at the clinic work with patients to understand their stories and values is inspiring and a testament to the transformative power of storytelling. So, to the Akrofu Health Center providers, akpe. Thank you."

Sophia Karris '23 (Sociology) interned with (HCDP Ghana) and the Akrofu Health Center. HCDP Ghana focuses its work on community empowerment. The organization connects volunteers with Ghanaian hospitals, schools, and businesses and supports community development projects. During the summer of 2022, Sophia lived in the small rural farming village of Akrofu-Agorve and worked at the local Akrofu Health Center. In her free time, Sophia created the HCDP Ghana Clarity Campaign to fundraise and implement rural eye health programs. A partnership between the Clarity Campaign and the Akrofu Health Center brought free eye screenings, glasses, and medication to over 500 patients living in rural Ghanaian communities.

Facing undeniable struggle, your hearts and minds serve as your hands create change. As I progress in my education and career, memories of your ingenuity and selflessness will guide my commitment to the common good."

Khalil Kilani '25 (Computer Science and Arabic) taught English and mathematics to children at , an organization that is dedicated to empowering underprivileged children in Cusco, Peru. His English curriculum focused on giving the children confidence in their conversational skills, while his mathematics curriculum introduced the children to fundamental concepts. On weekends, Khalil organized music lessons for children in his neighborhood and helped build new classrooms at Helping Hands. Furthermore, Khalil traveled to rural villages to donate food and books. It was in these rural villages that he became motivated to co-found Proyecto Maruja, a company that ethically produces alpaca wool apparel to benefit Peruvian youth.

“Education is a tool to end the vicious cycle of poverty. With this core belief in mind, I worked with Helping Hands to improve the living standards of underprivileged Peruvian children and to cultivate their development as future leaders. I learned that having confidence in a child’s ability to grow, and possessing the unconditional compassion to teach them, are both essential components of making a positive difference in the field of education.”

Alexandria Pizzino '23 (Sociology) interned at in Playa Sámara, Costa Rica. CREAR is an organization that provides free, quality supplementary education for public school students through Art and English Classes. Allie worked as a Strategic Development and Operations Intern and Class Aide, focusing on a variety of tasks such as graphic design, lesson planning, and classroom instruction in English and Spanish. She also assisted in writing the Primer Informe for a grant from the Costa Rican Ministry of Culture and Youth and CREAR’s 2021 Annual Report.

“I had a wonderful summer interning with La Asociación CREAR, and I am very grateful for the experiences and memories. Every day was an opportunity to learn and develop skills due to the variety of tasks and assignments. I loved working in the creative, bi-lingual environment at CREAR where the organization was so intertwined within the community.”

Jay Sayler '23 (Government and Legal Studies) spent the summer in Lomé, Togo (West Africa) working for the NGO (YVE). He mainly worked on improving the organization’s English-Language capacity and online presence through translating documents from French and writing articles about YVE’s projects. He was able to accompany the YVE team to a range of events, including conferences, meetings, and community gatherings. Besides the valuable professional experience Jay gained at the YVE office, he made great friends with his colleagues and is grateful to them for their support and enthusiasm in teaching him about Togolese society and West African culture.

“Working at Young Volunteers for the Environment was an incredible opportunity. I was so lucky to be able to spend the summer surrounded by such energetic, hard-working, and fun colleagues. I never thought I’d be able to say that my first office job was in West Africa, but I’m happy it was, and I can’t wait to go back.”

Jack Selig '24 (Government and Legal Studies) worked at , a small supplementary education non-profit based in Playa Sámara. Since 2005, CREAR has provided free English and Art classes to local students four times a week. As a strategic development intern, Jack worked on a number of projects including updating the monitoring and evaluation strategy for CREAR art and English classes, completing a report for the Costa Rican Ministry of Culture that detailed CREAR’s impact in 2022, and running two - week long camps for students in the communities of Samara and El Torito. Along with his work in the office, Jack helped teach both English and Art class in the afternoons.

“My summer experience as a Global Citizen Fellow was full of learning. I got a glimpse of what life and the culture is like in the small town of Samara, made new friends with whom I had great adventures, consistently practiced my Spanish, and was lucky enough to learn what working an impactful non-profit looks like. I am extremely grateful that I had this opportunity.”

Song Eraou ’23 (Economics and History) interned at , an organization based in Malaysia that works to close the education gap between rural and urban communities by installing technology in rural areas for educational purposes. Her role involved managing the Indigenous Digital Outreach Program (iDOP), a project to build a library in Kuala Tatau, Sarawak. For this, she collected and analyzed data from previous site visits and outreach programs, planned for the subsequent outreach program, wrote reports for the nonprofit’s stakeholders, and acted as a communication liaison between the nonprofit and the community. She also worked as a social media intern which involved her managing the nonprofit’s website and social media pages.

“I want to express my gratitude to the McKeen Center for granting me a fellowship that allowed me to work closely with a grassroots organization in Malaysia. Working with The Champions opened my eyes to both the struggles faced by rural communities that face a lack of access to educational tools and the struggles faced by local organizations in having to jump through hoops to make education more accessible.”

Arturo Linan-Martinez ’23 (Biology) worked as a research intern for , an organization that focuses on advancing cures and [preventing] childhood diseases through clinical excellence, research, and innovation. His role involved him preparing clinical trials with the research team, maintaining the consistency of incoming and existing inventory, updating the Cancer/Patient Registry, and using the registry to conduct reports in order to filter potential subjects for specific studies. He also reviewed consent forms, translated for families, shipped medical samples after going through International Air Transport Association (IATA) training, and tracked the results and patient consistency of ongoing trials.

“I cannot voice my gratitude enough to Cure 4 the Kids for providing me with a fulfilling experience that gave me a better understanding of how hospitals, specifically pediatric institutions, operate. Growing up, I have always wanted to become a pediatrician and this fellowship reassured me of that career path.”

Annika Moore ’23 (English) worked at , an organization created by and for immigrant women in Maine. IHP’s primary goal is to empower immigrant women and families through language acquisition classes, networking opportunities, and educational and career development programming. During her time at IHP, Annika focused on grant writing, brochure design and research in support IHP’s emerging cultural brokering initiatives. One of her projects included designing a booklet outlining IHP’s cultural brokering services for potential partners and funders.

“This fellowship was an incredible opportunity to learn about the unique challenges faced by immigrant women in Maine and to understand the path toward empowerment. I would like to thank my supervisor Claudette and the rest of the team at IHP for their support and guidance throughout the summer.”

Margot Ngo ’23 (Anthropology and English) worked at two organizations: and . ProsperityME empowers members of refugee and immigrant communities to invest in themselves to build financial stability, careers, and wealth through education and counseling. Margot’s work there primarily centered around researching, compiling, and creating documents to increase accessibility amongst staff members. Year Up is an organization that aims to close the Opportunity Divide by ensuring young adults gain the skills, experiences, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through careers and higher education. At YearUp, Margot contributed to the Knowledge Management System to increase accessibility to the historic and overall knowledge of the organization.

“My work with ProsperityME primarily centered around researching, compiling, and creating documents to increase accessibility amongst staff members. I deeply valued my experiences collaborating with ProsperityME to support their internal work and hopefully contribute to the community beyond.”

“I am honored to have worked with YearUp in further developing their Knowledge Management System. The expansion of this work allows their staff to better access and understand critical data and research, and to integrate it into their practices across the organization.”

Edwardo Perez ’23 (Government and Economics) worked at , a community center that provides squash, wellness, and education in Portland, ME to unite neighbors of all ages and backgrounds and to support youth on their journeys from elementary school into adulthood. His responsibilities included operating front desk shifts, shadowing PCS’ executive director, coaching squash while obtaining a Level One US squash coaching certification, and helping shoot a video promoting the Community Squash model in coordination with US Squash.

“PCS works to bridge the gap between different communities in Portland, while providing  families from underprivileged communities the experiences and opportunities that they would miss out on otherwise. I am grateful to PCS for the experience I gained in helping to support their mission while being able to pursue my own passion—playing and coaching squash.”

Lily Poppen ’22 worked for , an organization that mobilizes hikers and everyone who loves the outdoors to explore, steward  and champion trails and public lands. Lily worked on the Trail Next Door Project to WTA’s gear lending capacity by helping to set up the new Puyallup Gear Lending Library and by managing the existing Seattle Gear Lending Library. She also worked on expanding access to trails by adding to WTA’s hiking guide and directory. Additionally, she supported WTA’s Outdoor Leadership Training Workshops by helping with partner organization outreach and by providing support for events.

“It was such an invaluable look into a career in serving communities both in an outdoor space and building partnerships that through dialogue and asking critical questions, constantly aim to best serve the organizations’ needs.”

John Soeder ’24 (Computer Science) worked with , a national non-profit that works to bridge the digital divide by providing affordable technology and wireless internet to individuals with low incomes. He worked on multiple computer distribution projects and helped with donation processing. This involved him assisting the Community Impact Manager by approving and fulfilling orders in the online order management database, coordinating several in-person distributions events and helping the warehouse crew track and sort donated electronic equipment.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with PCs for People. I learned so much about the inequities that exist in my hometown, and it was inspiring working alongside people who have devoted their lives to combatting these problems.”

Roman Parajon ’22 (Government and Economics) worked at , an organization in South Los Angeles that provides a myriad of vital services to adults and youth for free, including ESL classes, employment assistance, financial literacy classes, supplemental food, and much more. His primary role was supporting the Center’s response to the impacts of COVID-19 on the residents of South LA. He worked on expanding the capacity of the Center’s Supplemental Food Program, enrolling new clients in the Homelessness Prevention Program, processing clients for emergency financial and rental assistance, and assessing the needs of families and vulnerable populations in the community.

“Although I did not picture myself staying home for my Global Citizens Fellowship when I first received it, I am immensely thankful for this valuable and enriching experience. I gained an in-depth and firsthand understanding of the complexities of running a local, urban non-profit and the pressing issues affecting  this community.”

Over the summer, Julia Rohde '20 (Neuroscience and Religion) volunteered with the in Amman, Jordan teaching English and working with children at a summer camp. Her English classes were attended by women who were eager to learn the English language, add structure to their days, and orient themselves toward a tangible goal. The summer camp in CRP’s downtown center served largely Sudanese refugees and low-income Jordanians. Julia taught Zumba and English and demonstrated creative ways to use cheap, household objects to create beautiful arts and crafts.

“At CRP, I taught English to Syrian and Sudanese women of all ages. I was truly inspired by how committed the women were to finding fulfillment in everyday life. They took every opportunity afforded them to grow by learning new skills, languages, and coping strategies. The trusting relationship that CRP has built with the leaders of both the Syrian and Sudanese communities— largely through grassroots efforts—is an inspiring feat that I am thrilled to have been a part of.”

Morgan Edwards ’22 (Government and History) worked for , an organization in Northern Ireland that uses basketball as a tool to bring youth together and break down prejudices in the historically divided community. His role included implementing PeacePlayers’ cross-community reconciliation and peacebuilding programming by acting as a coach, mentor, demonstrator, and educator for over 300 youth from some of Belfast’s most notorious interface areas. He also directed “twinnings” (a program that pairs a Catholic and Protestant school for basketball, team-building, and community relations conversations), handled communications, and monitored social media analytics.

“Throughout my time with PeacePlayers, I have witnessed the power of basketball in allowing youth from each side of the sectarian divide to break down barriers, discover common ground, and forge new friendships. We have to set the ball rolling by getting people in the same room to have difficult conversations about difficult topics.”

Liana Harrington ’21 (Psychology and English) worked at , an organization in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, which serves rural beach communities in and around Playa Sámara by offering daily after-school English and art classes to the local youth. Her role as a Strategic Development and Operations intern involved her developing criteria used to evaluate potential grants for the nonprofit to pursue and recommending which grants to pursue based on these criteria. She also collaborated on grant applications to fund the organization’s environmental education program. Moreover, she planned and co-ran a two-week long summer camp and facilitated 1-week-long community service projects for visiting groups of volunteers.

 “My experience collaborating with a tight-knit team this summer has, in my mind, reinforced the need for humility when entering a new space as an outsider. While I know that education is not the only way in which one may achieve happiness or success, it has brought me great joy to have worked with CREAR as it engages deeply and thoughtfully with the beautiful community of Sámara.”

Marina MacKinnon ’20 (Biology and Sociology) volunteered for , an organization that helps children in the Guatemala City garbage dump community— one of the most impoverished communities of Guatemala —break the cycle of poverty through education, emphasizing life skills and perseverance in order to thrive in work and contribute to their community. Her role as a volunteer included assisting in third grade classes, supporting teenagers in English classes and providing homework assistance to students. She also tutored women and mothers who were part of the social entrepreneurship program and the adult education program.

 “While at Safe Passage, I was able to gain insight into the social, political, and economic issues that surround access to education for such marginalized communities. I also gained a more comprehensive understanding of the factors that affect health and well-being, as education and health go hand in hand.”

Arein Nguyen ’21 (Sociology and Latin American Studies) interned at , an organization that strives to connect people along the San Diego/Tijuana border region by fostering relationships through community service, education collaboration and cultural exchange. Arein’s main role was to manage the office support center which involved him interacting with local shelters to find spaces for migrants and recent deportees for their stay.  He also accompanied migrants to clinics and legal offices, helped to set up a new community center for mothers and children and organized clothing and material donations.Last but not least, he provided support to Mexican nationals in acquiring identification, birth certificates and other legal documents.

 “Helping families and individuals cope with their new environments once they are caught in the United States’ broken immigration system and the “migrant purgatory” that is Tijuana has reaffirmed my belief that comprehensive immigration reform is urgent, important and requires conversations and action not only between the U.S. and Mexico but Central America, Haiti and several other African countries as well. Legislation must work to address not only those who are coming but those who have been in the U.S. for years. No matter how strict and exclusive our immigration system is, when presented with dire conditions, people will risk their lives to take the treacherous route to the U.S. for a chance to survive.”

Aliya-Begum Jessa ‘19 (Sociology and Psychology) spent her summer working with two NGOs in Lesvos, Greece: an island off the coast of Turkey that houses over 10,000 refugees, mostly from Syria and Iraq. Aliya worked with  boat spotting for incoming dinghies from Turkey and organizing children’s activities at an emergency temporary refugee camp. She also worked with  teaching women’s English classes, running an open café, and setting up a center for women and children adjacent to the largest refugee camp on the island, Moria, which contains over 6,000 refugees. Aliya also worked with these organizations to respond to emergency situations on the island, creating safe spaces for women and children to escape fighting.  

“Although I saw some incredibly difficult things and had a tough experience, the connections I made with migrants and volunteers from all around the world are invaluable. Meeting refugees and being able to help them, albeit in very trivial ways, solidified for me that this is what I want to do in my future career.” 

Erin Morrissey ‘19 (Neuroscience) spent her summer in Tanga, Tanzania volunteering with a children’s rights charity called . There, she worked directly with the organization’s social worker to advocate for orphaned and vulnerable children. Pamoja Leo promotes family and community based care for orphans and vulnerable children by providing education counseling services, teaching entrepreneurship and useful skills to the families, and supporting young girls to be safe and confident. Erin spent much of her time helping to run the Girls Group program which involved teaching fun and useful skills (e.g. cooking, sewing, beading) to vulnerable and at-risk teenage girls. 

“Through my time at Pamoja Leo and living in Tanzania, my world view expanded greatly. I learned so much about the importance of perseverance, child advocacy, and appreciation of supportive relationships. I am so excited to continue with this work and share this newfound perspective with the 91ºÚÁÏ community.”  

Jacob Dexter-Muldrum ‘21 volunteered at the  in Amman, Jordan. The Collateral Repair Project is a community center that serves urban refugees from Syria and Iraq. Jake taught English and assisted in leading and organizing the Collateral Repair Project’s After School Program and Summer Camp. The English teaching program is aimed at increasing the refugee community’s proficiency in English, which can help refugees acquire jobs in Amman and can be beneficial if they are resettled in English speaking countries. The After School and Summer Camp programs attempt to increase numeracy, literacy, interpersonal communication, conflict resolution skills, and promote healing and wellness.  

“Throughout my time working at the Collateral Repair Project, I was inspired by the optimism and grit of the refugee community. Many of the individuals I had the opportunity to work alongside had been displaced in Jordan for years after having lost their homes to violent conflict. Many carried little hope of resettlement, were often separated from their families, and had little to no ability to make money in Jordan. Regardless, the individuals I worked with strove to create a community that supported one another in overcoming present adversity and previous trauma. It was a beautiful mission to witness and be a part of.”

Lexi Gray ‘19 (Psychology and Italian Studies) spent her summer volunteering at , an alternative incarceration program in Rome, Italy. In Italy children can live in prison with their incarcerated mothers until the age of three. A Roma Insieme created Casa di Leda as an alternative to these children living behind bars, providing a house for six mothers and their children. Many of the women are Romani and have difficulty finding employment due to prejudice and lack of documentation. Casa di Leda strives to create the best possible environment for the children and to eliminate barriers to successful reentry by helping these women access legal aid, education, and other support services.  

“My summer taught me about the marginalization and ostracization of being Romani in Italian society. At first, I worried our cultural differences would impede genuine connection. It turns out, we all like Beyoncé and a good bowl of homemade Italian pasta, and all the things we share far outweigh our differences. Through conversation and shared experience, all the stereotypes and cultural differences melt away. I’m forever grateful to the women I met for their openness, generosity, and for accepting me as one of their own.”

Leah Howard '18 (Neuroscience) spent her summer in Sangolquí, Ecuador working with (MPI). MPI is a nonprofit that offers English classes, nutrition classes, and other various classes for the community, while also partnering with local public schools and shelters. In addition to teaching classes at the MPI center, Leah spent a majority of her time working with their partner organization, Hogar de la Madre, a shelter for teenage girls who have children as a result of sexual assault.

"During my time in Ecuador, although I learned about the cultural differences and issues specific to Sangolquí, I felt stronger than ever a deep sense of shared humanity. I was able to learn about the unique experiences of the people I met, but was also struck by the similarity of these experiences and challenges to some of the critical issues that face our country and many others countries."

Theodora Hurley '20 (Environmental Studies) partnered with , a language and cultural organization in Urubamba, Peru, to teach English for ten weeks. She provided basic, intermediate, and advanced English classes to students aged 14 – 40. Her students came from Spanish- and Quechua-speaking backgrounds and were primarily motivated to learn English in order to obtain jobs in the hospitality and tourism industries.

My time in Urubamba demonstrated to me the power of language education to facilitate cross-cultural exchange. Language possesses an incredible capacity to empower people to tell their own stories, and I feel so grateful to have engaged in, facilitated, and learned through cross-cultural exchange.

Morgan Rielly '18 (Government & Legal Studies and Religion) spent the summer working for the in the Hashemi Shemali neighborhood of East Amman, Jordan. CRP works with Syrian, Iraqi, and Sudanese refugees by creating a community center for them and providing food vouchers. Morgan worked as an intern at CRP where he took over their social media accounts and led a four-week Awareness Campaign that helped get hundreds of new followers for CRP. He also volunteered at the summer camp club where he taught English, math, and health to Syrian and Iraqi children ages 6 to 12.

"Many of my coworkers are Syrian and Iraqi refugees who went through extraordinary experiences to get to the safety of Amman, Jordan. Their courage, kindness, and perseverance have left a lasting mark on me that I hope to share with both the 91ºÚÁÏ community and beyond."

Sophie Sadovnikoff '19 (Government & Legal Studies and Sociology) spent her summer at , a residential community in Johannesburg, South Africa, for women with HIV, their children, and children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Nkosi’s Haven provides food and permanent housing, as well as funding for school and other opportunities for their residents. Sophie’s primary responsibility was running the on-site daycare center for the children living at the Haven who are too young to be enrolled in school.

"My time at Nkosi’s Haven changed me in ways that nothing other than first-hand experience could. I came into my summer a limited world view, but I left Johannesburg with new perspectives, valuable personal connections, and many questions to drive me forward into my future work."

Jing Xie '18 (Neuroscience) split her time between and Shanyin Psychiatric Hospital in Beijing and Shanyin, China. Beijing Tiantan Hospital provides healthcare to China's capital through neurological surgeries and psychiatric support. Shanyin Psychiatric Hospital serves a very small, rural community of Shanyin by using traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture to treat psychiatric disorders. Jing worked alongside two doctors at each respective hospitals and helped in a variety of ways, such as obtaining and storing blood samples to psychiatric patient care. Her main project consisted of introducing the rural communities that had limited access to healthcare to new medicine that would treat psychiatric disorders.

"I arrived in Beijing with an optimistic and idealistic view on healthcare and I was met with the grueling, often painful, truth about how difficult it was for many communities to gain access to healthcare. I was able to gain a far more complicated outlook at what is important in healthcare, and the different difficulties and problems that doctors face when it comes to giving proper treatments to these communities."

This summer, Mariely Garcia '17 (Neuroscience) worked with , a small grassroots organization in Gorubathan, India. In the mornings, she split her time between teaching English to first graders and leading mental health awareness programs at schools in and around Gorubathan. In the afternoons she assisted at a daycare center operated by HMWS and in the evening, she led women’s empowerment workshops focused on human trafficking, domestic violence, rape, and the laws that protect women against these offenses.

"Before leaving for India, one of my biggest fears was not being able to meaningfully connect with the people I would meet. In retrospect, it was a silly fear because after arriving, it quickly became obvious that our shared humanity, regardless of national borders and language differences, is enough to make even the most foreign places feel like home. I am eternally grateful to all the children, aunties, friends, and volunteers who filled my days with laughs, hugs, life lessons, and unconditional love."

Ryan Herman '17 (Biochemistry) spent his summer in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India volunteering with , a center and school for homeless boys. The center aims to provide food and accommodation, educational facilities, and health and AIDS awareness while also attempting to locate and reunite the children’s families. His daily tasks consisted of instructing English, Hindi, and Mathematics classes. Additional responsibilities ranged from leading yoga exercises to facilitating conversations around alcohol and drugs. Ryan, seeking to extend the center’s ability to emotionally support its students in their transition home, crafted and implemented workshops surrounding issues of grief, suffering, and loss.

"The worst thing to be asked upon returning was "Ryan, how was India?". The instinct to say 'good' feels dirty as it lingers on the tip of my tongue. My time in Jaipur was defined by a complex mix of spontaneity, emotion, and sweat. Sunrise yoga. 2AM tuktuk drives. Bartering for that last bus ticket home. Evening kite wars. Laundry-stealing monkeys. Running from dogs. Bovine traffic. Watching my students rebuild a home for themselves, forming a community, embracing a brotherhood. Tears. Sweat. Sweat. And that one incident with cholera. How does one sum up all that, all that feeling, activity, questioning, with 'good'? I will never be able to truly convey the worth of this experience, but after returning to the U.S., and recognizing the wealth of community and friendships I formed, I aspire to never discredit or simplify this experience by labeling it only 'good'."

Sam Kenney '19 (Francophone Studies) spent his Freshman summer in Saint-Louis, Senegal with , a private non-profit which serves begging street children, locally called talibés. Maison de la Gare offers educational programs, basic health care, sanitation, food, and emergency shelter for the talibé children, who range in age from four to twenty. Above all the organization aims to create a safe environment for educational and social development. Sam devoted most of his time to the task of registering the talibés who came into the center. He also held a daily language course for the English-speaking talibés.

"I came to Saint-Louis an idealist, wanting to live the story that I so valued intellectually—cultural exchange, education, humanitarian aid. What I gained, however, has been so much greater. There will never be a single memory to encapsulate a summer, much less a country, and I’m thankful to Senegal for all the things I can’t easily express in words. All the conversations, social cues, and events which over time have changed my perspective on my own culture and experience."

Liam Nicoll '18 (Government & Legal Studies and Religion) worked as a volunteer with the in Amman, Jordan, with their summer programs for refugee youth. These programs worked to create educational experiences, social exposure and fun for the refugee youth of East Amman. Liam ran the summer programs under his advisor and with his peers in order to provide an educational experience to the kids. Activities consisted of Elementary Education, English, Arts and Crafts, Music and Physical Education. During his experience in Amman, he was able to see the stress that massive influxes of people and the lack of natural resources put on a government and on a country. He experienced water shortages, food voucher programs, and poor living conditions. This however, did not defined his experience. As he discovered that the generosity and hospitality of Jordan are stronger than any political structure, any government, or any war.

"My time at the CRP gave me extreme confidence in the humanity and hospitality of Jordanian culture and its newest Syrian and Iraqi residents. Negative stereotypes vanished, as I hoped they would, and I fostered some truly wonderful relationships with some of the most genuine kind people I have never met. Yet, my experience did not come without challenges. I am now well aware of the horrible circumstances that come from resource shortages. I became accustomed to seeing shortages of water, food, shelter, and, most prominently, school resources. Before this summer I never knew how important resources are for comfortable living, everyday life, and, most noticeable in my case, children’s educations."

Dhivya Singaram '17 (Anthropology) worked with , an NGO in Madurai, India that works with lower caste children and spreads awareness of child rights. She assisted with and facilitated programming including their Seniors’ Meet, Science Forum, holiday celebrations, and festivals. A crucial part of her work involved conducting field visits to different slum areas and Vidiyal centers in Madurai. The knowledge and context she gained from these field visits gave her the foundation to conduct research on representation of children in Tamil Nadu media. Lastly, she collaborated with Vidiyal children to create a documentary short on child rights.

"I questioned my role at Vidiyal many times. ‘What are my goals? How is my presence being received? Is my work here of value to Vidiyal?’ Through self-reflection, questioning, and listening, I answered and re-answered these questions throughout the ten weeks. The children, their families, and their city were my teachers. I am confident that no one could have taught me better about discrimination based on caste, a practice that is illegal yet very much alive."

This summer, Katherine Coleman '16 implemented an art curriculum at at the Tramneak Pagoda in Siem Reap, Cambodia. With her students - primarily Buddhist monks and local children from the nearby village – she explored self-expression and the potential of art to be everywhere. They focused on what became a sort of class motto: "There is no right answer, and everything can be beautiful."

"This was the hardest ten weeks of my life, and I wouldn’t trade it for any other ten weeks. I learned more about myself than I ever have in such a condensed period of time. My eyes were opened to my own naivety and to the brutality of a lot of the world, but also to distinct human resilience and joy. Appreciation and humility were redefined in my eyes. I interacted and interpersonally connected with human beings I would never otherwise have come into contact with, children in rural Cambodia who I, painfully, might never see again. But they are in my memory forever, and maybe, if I’m lucky, I’m in theirs. And every moment of it, every sweaty, sickly-sweet, exhausted, teary, smiling moment of it, was phenomenal."

Rubi Duran '16 spent her time working with , a non-profit in Pacullpa, Peru that seeks to provide educational, nutritional, and social support the local Shipibo people. Rubi worked with mothers and their children through a program called Grow & Cook, which was created in response to the poor diet and growing nutritional deficiencies and illnesses present in Shipibo and indigenous communities across the Amazon. Together they discussed basic nutrition, cooked together, and helped start a permaculture site where fruits and veggies were planted for the community to share in the future.

"The connection which the Shipibo people have to nature opened my eyes to new perspectives of beauty, health, education, and life in general. I could not be more grateful to have met such amazing individuals."

Sarah Frankl '16 worked at in Chimbote, Peru. She spent time working with a nutritionist to develop an educational pamphlet for pregnant women. In addition, she assisted in the outpatient clinic, well-child measurements, and home visits. However, the majority of her time was spent at the Maternidad's orphanage, which was the home to 16 children, all under five. Her best Peruvian friend was two and named Kenlli.

"While on a home visit, the mother we were visiting asked me and the nurse to watch her disabled child while she ran an errand. She came back a few minutes later with juice, snacks, and gifts for us. I was so touched by the generosity with which the Peruvian people received me. I felt as if, simply by watching them, I could learn a bit about how to be a better person."

June Guo '16 spent her summer in Lukwambe Village in Tanzania, working with Ngerengere River Eco Camp. The Eco Camp aims to promote environmental sustainability through education, job training, and eco-conservation projects. During her time there, June developed and taught classes on food culture, agriculture, and first aid for local children and teens. She also led daily exercise classes, which included running, stretching, and laughter yoga. One of June’s favorite projects was establishing experimental organic gardens using recycled materials, local seeds, and water-efficient techniques.

"An hour before school started, students would arrive to carry river water to clean the schoolrooms and bathrooms. The children were the first to arrive and the last to leave the school. Seeing how much the children wanted to be at school really touched me."

Through the non-profit organization (CNH), Chris Gys '17 worked with children in communities around Huaraz, Peru. Of CNH's three main emphases – multivitamin distribution, creative expression, and the "Do the right thing" campaign – Chris devoted most of his time to the last of these. He led activities that focused on applying this principle to situations the children would encounter on a daily basis, and he started a soccer program that taught goal-setting and teamwork through practices and games.

"At the end of each soccer game, we would hand out a medal to the "Most Valuable Player" of the day. On one particularly sunny Saturday morning, the MVP was a boy who had shown leadership and hard work. There was something about the smile on his face after receiving the medal that communicated a deeper contentment, something that went beyond the happiness of getting a shiny prize. I'm not sure I can capture entirely what it was, but it made it seem like my presence was something positive in that moment, and that it might remain something positive after I left. With more certainty I can say it seemed to highlight the relationship he and I had built despite vastly different lives."

Erin McKissick '16 worked as a journalist at the social work nonprofit in Dharamsala, a Tibetan refugee community in northern India. She wrote for their free monthly publication, Contact Magazine, and was their primary news reporter for the upcoming Tibetan parliamentary election. She also volunteered part-time as a childcare assistant at Rogpa, a free daycare for the children of Tibetan refugees.

"During my time in Dharamsala, I witnessed people working on issues that personally affected their lives as Tibetan refugees, and saw how this connection to a cause transformed their work ethic and gave them a remarkable sense of purpose. I was in awe of their passion and determination in a challenging political situation, and I return newly energized to advocate for issues that inspire me."

Lauren Nguyen '17 spent her summer in Rabat, Morocco working with physically and/or mentally handicapped children at the Lalla Meryem Center orphanage through the . She helped with daily tasks such as bathing, changing, feeding, as well as assisting in educational activities. The Lalla Meryem Center also houses newborns, toddlers, and children of all ages.

"I've realized the greater value of spending five minutes to greet someone in passing than being five minutes late. I've discovered that pieces of bread work wonders in comparison to forks and knives. I've grumbled about being woken up by, and now sincerely miss, the 4am call-to-prayer. I am fortunate enough to say I found a second place to call home in the colorful country of Morocco."

Liem Tu '18 spent the summer in Senegal working for , a shelter for street boys in the city of Saint-Louis. MDG seeks to improve living conditions by providing water, clothes, food, health care, and education to the boys. Liem taught daily language classes in French and English and organized sports activities at the center.

"I came to Senegal expecting to discover a new culture, gain experience teaching, improve my French, and support a cause that was bigger than me. Looking back on it, I gained so much more from this experience than just achieving those goals. Being exposed to a different way of life and the realities of the non-Western world led me to reflect and reconsider many aspects of my life at home."

Lily Woodward '17 spent 10 weeks in Moshi, Tanzania as an English teacher for an adult women's school, . This school provides English language, business, and vocational education to local women, catering to those who are single mothers, from minority ethnic groups, or make little to no income. While there, Lily helped develop a recreation program for local children, organized home visits with students, and helped recent grads further develop their businesses.

"This experience was one of the most formative of not only my 91ºÚÁÏ career, but of my life so far. Though I was there teaching, I so often felt that I was the student - I was continually pushed out of my comfort zone, and while things weren't always perfect, every day was a lesson. Looking back, I am so grateful to have taken the leap to apply for the grant, because I came back to 91ºÚÁÏ a different person."

Meghan Bellerose '17 spent the summer of 2014 working with , a community based non-profit that provides healthcare resources and education to children and young adults in Kpando, Ghana. In the mornings, Meghan led discussion groups for teenagers and young adults on health topics such as family planning, HIV/AIDS, condom use, blood contact, and female empowerment. She also worked closely with pregnant women in Kpando and nearby villages, providing information on the signs of a healthy pregnancy and discussing the health and financial resources available to the women and their children. In the afternoons, Meghan worked at HardtHaven Children's home, UNITED's shelter for children who have lost parents to HIV/AIDS or suffer from the disease themselves, helping with homework, daily activities, and health monitoring. 

“I celebrated with the women who ran the home as we watched two of the children go through remarkable recoveries, sobbed when one of the older girls passed on, smiled with a little boy when he read an entire book out loud by himself, danced for hours to the Macarena with ten 5-11 year olds, and cheered when all 26 children passed their exams.  All of these moments have changed me.”

Juliet Eyraud '16 spent the beginning of her summer in Phnom Penh, Cambodia working for Children for Change Cambodia (CCC) as an English Teacher and Social Action Intern. CCC serves children living in a red-light district of the city, offering them supplementary academic classes, school scholarships, emergency housing, and a supportive network of students and teachers. She also instituted a curriculum she had developed in independent work at 91ºÚÁÏ. Juliet will return to Phnom Penh in the summer of 2015 to continue her work. 

"My plan was to implement a curriculum that I had worked on as an Independent Study with Professor Casey Meehan at 91ºÚÁÏ after I volunteered at CCC during the summer of 2013. The curriculum was designed to introduce the students to community service while also allowing them to celebrate their communities...The new community service program at the school is now being enveloped into a larger, sustainable structure that includes social action and using multimedia to promote social justice." 

Oriana Farnham '15 spent the summer in Ho Chi Minh City (but most people she met there called it Saigon), Vietnam. Oriana volunteered at Little Rose Shelter, one of Saigon's few non-profit organizations, which is a home for girls who have been or are at risk of being sexually abused or trafficked. The girls were on summer break, so they spent the days doing crafts, singing, and learning to play ukulele. The shelter is a place where the girls can relax, but they also work on outreach in their community to educate young people about sexual health and raise awareness around the issues of domestic and sexual abuse. 

“Though I have always been very interested in women’s issues in academic and other contexts, it is only after this summer that I know I want my career to be concerned with these issues. I met so many women this summer who inspired me…and I learned so much about the experiences of girls and women in Vietnamese society, which made me reflect on the experience of growing up female in Western society.”

Jesse Ortiz '16 spent the summer of 2014 in Kathmandu, Nepal volunteering with Social Development Center Nepal (SDCN). SDCN is a children’s home, currently caring for fifteen children whose parents are unable to support them. The organization provides the food, housing, education and medical care that otherwise may not have been available to the children. Jesse also taught classes at Little Blossoms School, which most of the chilren of SDCN attended. 

"I don't know what I want to do after college, but I'll carry the experience wherever I go. Any success I achieve or insight I discover for the rest of my life will carry some trace of that wonderful trip."

Meredith Outterson '17 worked this summer in the local school of a rural community in San Juan de la Concepcion, Nicaragua as part of 's community development programs. Meredith lived with a host family and tutored kids in the mornings. She also ran after-school enrichment activities, and facilitated long-term school improvement projects such as revamping the pre-school classroom and launching a program with educational tablets. 

"Through this work, I got to know the fabric of the community and gained a sense of each of the vibrant threads that make it up. I had to be self-motivated in order to finish the projects I had set for myself (like running a school field-trip to a volcano!)  But, I also had the support of several amazing families in the community, and I am incredibly thankful that I got the opportunity to be there and live there for as long as I did." 

David Silverman '15 spent the summer of 2014 working with the , a nonprofit that runs after-school programs to educate and empower youth living in the challenged and vulnerable townships outside of Cape Town, South Africa. With the Literacy (ELL) program, he created and implemented daily lesson plans for a class of 4th-7th grader, and while working with the HIV/AIDS Peer Education and Prevention program, David worked to create and implement student evaluation surveys and establish a system of lesson plan creation and standardization. Lastly, David worked with the Environmental program to assess and institute potential improvements to the Amy Biehl school overnight camps, to lead hikes around the area, and to create a guide for how to lead outdoor outings safely.

"This summer with ABF gave me the fantastic learning opportunity of working within the framework of existing community structures and an organization’s hierarchy, remaining cognizant of my role in promoting the visions and ideas of community members, while maintaining my own creativity in how I hoped to achieve small but lasting impact.”

Alex Thomas '16 lived and worked in Lusaka, Zambia this summer. He volunteered for the , an organization that works with the Zambian and Rwandan governments to build HIV treatment capacity in their national healthcare systems. Alexander specifically focused on the acceptability and uptake of medical male circumcision as an HIV prevention strategy in sero-discordant couples visiting Zambian government clinics.

“I learned that understanding and engaging different nationalities begins with embracing who you are. Every one of us has a national, ethnic, and religious identity that for better or worse defines who we are to the outside world. Coming to terms with how you relate to that outwardly perceived identity is the first step in learning how others relate to theirs.”

Maggie Acosta '16 traveled to a developing city named Huancayo in the heart of the Andes of Peru.  She worked for a grassroots organization that focuses on healthcare and education. Maggie eventually began her own project working for a neurologist in the regional Es Salud Hospital and opened an after-school program for kids ages 6-13.

"During my time in Peru, I made friends with university students around my age. Although we were students from two very different countries and cultures, we connected in infinite ways. It just goes to show that language can overcome so many barriers between people and form relationships that become instilled deep within you."

Evan Bulman '16 spent June and July of 2013 in Kabala, Sierra Leone working hand in hand with Nar Sarah Medical Clinic through . As a fulltime volunteer with this organization, he worked chiefly to expand their financial sustainability projects. This work included farming, providing computer education, and tutoring English and Mathematics.

"Being teased as 'a Krio Boy' (a local tribe) at a family meal during my last few days in Sierra Leone was the perfect confirmation that the Sierra Leoneans I had the privilege to work with last summer were some of the most wonderful and hospitable people I have ever met."

Will Horne '14 lived in the Isan region of Thailand in Plaboo Village.  In this village of about 70 families, he volunteered at the Farmer Community School as an English teacher and worked with students daily to provide them opportunities to engage and become familiar with the foreign language.  The Farmer Community School, provides the area's youth with schooling in English as well as Thai heritage, traditional farming techniques, sex education, and leadership skills. It serves expose and engage students in subjects often left out of traditional Thai schooling.

"I'd never before met an entire community of such warm and caring people. Even beyond the amazingly enthusiastic kids, the adults and elders of the village greeted me with smiles, prayers, and open invitations to all of their community and engagements. The 'village' would be more aptly referred to as a 'family'.  It was an amazing experience to feel a part of it, if only for two months."

Marcus Karim '14 spent his summer working with , an education-based non-profit in Huaraz, Peru that seeks to provide educational, health, and social support to local children and their families. Marcus spent his mornings working in a soup kitchen, providing meals to clients in the local community, and transitioned into a teaching role in the afternoons where he instructed students in math, science, and public health education. Furthermore, Marcus conducted self-esteem building activities with students to allow them to begin to develop a deep sense of worth and integrity in themselves, allowing them to see, and hopefully realize, their innate potential in the world around them.

"My time with Changes for New Hope was invaluable.  I learned the immense value of building relationships with, and investing in, others, witnessed the resilience of the human spirit in the face of seemingly overwhelming obstacles.  I came to truly appreciate human interconnectedness between cultures, across languages, and amongst people from different ways of life. While the world is undoubtedly vast and its people increasingly diverse, I have begun to realize, through my experience as a Global Citizen, that it may be the universal human desire to impact and touch the lives of those around us that acts as the common thread which weaves us together into a beautiful patchwork fabric of different life experiences, ideas, and world visions."

Marble Karuu '14 spent her summer in Iten, Kenya working with the . Since 2004, KenSAP has been assisting high achieving high school graduates from disadvantaged backgrounds apply to colleges and universities in the United States. Marble served as an instructor for the program, conducting daily classes to help prepare the students for the SAT and TOEFL exams and begin the college application process.

"I've come back from Kenya with a new appreciation for the power that education has in changing the circumstances of people's lives. The students I worked with overcame a number of unconventional obstacles on their journeys to complete high school. In their success they defied the circumstances of their backgrounds and came to stand out as examples in their families and communities. They're all very deserving of the opportunities that lie ahead if and when admitted to colleges and universities here in the US. I look forward to seeing them all again 10 months from now when they land at the airport."

Julie Bender '13 spent the summer working with a medical clinic and orphanage at in Kaberamaido, Uganda.  Asayo's Wish Foundation began as a home for displaced children. Since its start, it has expanded into a clinic for the rural area and a farm used to teach the children about raising animals and growing crops. Julie split her time between three projects: helping the children to care for the organization’s chickens, sheep, cows, and goats, assisting with the electronic medical record system in the medical clinic, leading daily English and Math tutoring sessions, and serving as a mentor and companion to the organization's 120 children.

"The children at Asayo's Wish were the happiest of any that I've ever met. I am so inspired by their ability to maintain such a positive attitude despite the atrocities that they have experienced. They welcomed me into their lives, invited me to join their games, taught me about their culture, and opened a place for me in their hearts. We laughed as I struggled to do their daily chores, and smiled as I shared new ideas. This summer I learned that the relationships I form are the most important aspect of my experiences."

Emma James '13 spent two months volunteering for , a nonprofit based in Sucre, Bolivia. BiblioWorks funds, builds, and stocks libraries in the rural areas surrounding Sucre. Emma spent half her time in the BiblioWorks office, grant writing, and the other half working in Pampa Aceituno, a small school with a brand new BiblioWorks library. She taught English, read to children, started a school garden, and did arts and crafts with the children to encourage reading.

"Waiting at the bottom of a dusty road for a truck to drive by and start the climb up the mountain to Pampa Aceituno, the school I worked in, was how I started many of my days in Sucre, Bolivia. With no provided transportation, the children either walk the two miles uphill, or wait to hitch a ride. The determination and dedication they exhibited in simply getting to school was one of the many ways they demonstrated the value they place on education. It seems like everyone shares one goal, and that is to make sure that the children of Pampa Aceituno receive the best education possible. The joy that a simple story can bring to them, or a silly arts and crafts project is heartening. Their absolute friendliness, incredible determination, and innovative spirit is contagious. Everyday when I left Pampa Aceituno I felt inspired by their beautiful smiles."

Micah Ludwig '13 spent June and July of 2012 working with in Buea, Cameroon. SDI Cameroon seeks to help vulnerable groups of people including teenage mothers, orphans, and the elderly. Micah served as a community health volunteer with SDI and was able to work in a health clinic, give health presentations, and also prepare health education materials.

"In many conversations I am quickly asked what my experience was like in Cameroon, and my reply is simply: rewarding, challenging, and  always educational. I was able to learn a great deal about the health issues affecting the population in Buea, and also begin to explore how I can incorporate public health work into my future career goals. Did I come back with solutions to how we address the problems in the developing world? No. In fact I came back with even more questions than when I left. Although I have a lot of questions, I am not troubled, instead I am excited to work through them. Right now I know meant to serve, and I will go wherever God calls me."

Tasha Sandoval '13 spent the summer of 2012 as an educational intern at the in Cape Town, South Africa. The District Six Museum is a community museum that seeks to collect and disseminate the memory of a once vibrant Capetonian community, District Six. Under the apartheid government’s ruthless Group Area’s Act, District Six was declared a "whites-only area" and its residents were forcibly removed to out-lying townships. Today, the museum acts as a meeting place for victims of the forced removals who continue to live with the consequences of removals' injustices. Upon arrival, Tasha learned that the museum's financial crisis would alter her role as an intern. Still Tasha was able to improvise and execute a workshop-series with high school students - explored personal narratives and history through oral, written, visual, and movement forms. She assisted with their workshop newsletters and with recording "Huis Kombuis" (Afrikaans for "Home Kitchen") - a weekly workshop where ex-resident, elderly women get together to share recipes, tell stories, and embroider their memories onto cloth. Working with these older women was most rewarding aspect of Tasha’s experience, as it allowed her to offer practical assistance with embroidery and design, get a primary historical perspective, and make strong and powerful personal connections with ex-residents themselves.

"South Africa is the most interesting place I have ever experienced. It is joyful and full of life as it simultaneously struggles with its traumatic past and uncertain future. The District Six Museum illustrated this tension through its telling of the District Six story. Working with ex-resident older women from District Six was the most valuable aspect of my experience. Having grown up, married, and reared children in the district, these women were forcibly removed from their homes in the 1970's and relocated to faraway townships. Despite their hardships, the women always kept the District Six community close to their hearts. I will never forget their kindness, strength, and beautiful, vibrant memories."

Lucy Walker '14 spent June and July of 2012 working in Nakuru, Kenya, volunteering with the , a small nonprofit that hosts a nursery school for disadvantaged children in Nakuru’s slums. Lucy worked with the Bliss teachers to design and implement a novel storybook-making curriculum at the nursery school. By the end of her stay, each of the students had narrated and illustrated his own storybook to add to "The Bliss Library", a bookshelf painted by the students and teachers. Upon completing the storybooks, the students and teachers celebrated with a storybook presentation attended by parents and members of the community. The Bliss school had previously been without any picture books, its curriculum largely devoted to rote memorization of English vocabulary. The storybook project builds upon the students' and teachers' strong sense of oral storytelling. It seeks to foster English language learning in a way that is cost-effective, fun, individualized, and personally upbuilding for the Bliss students.

"While my time in Kenya was challenging, it was also incredibly joyful. I had so much fun as I formed friendships with the Bliss teachers and students and worked with them to create beautiful storybooks. I shared with them something that I loved, and in the process saw them tap into their own joy and creativity. I learned that service doesn't need to be a struggle—when people and communities have fun, they can do amazing things."

Elena Crosley '13 volunteered at in Granada, Nicaragua. Casa Lupita treats the dogs, cats and work horses of Granada, Nicaragua and many spays and neuters are performed in order to reduce the number of street animals. Escuelita Yo Puedo is a school that provides children with homework help, English classes, and piano lessons.

"My time spent in Granada, Nicaragua was unlike anything I had been exposed to before. I was able to spend my mornings working with students on their English and math while being updated on the latest Spanish slang words and in the afternoon I could assist a veterinarian in the surgery room and have the opportunity to talk to owners in the waiting room about their animals, the clinic and their country. I will always hold this experience close and I will continue to value human relationships and the importance of education."

Macy Galvan '13 spent June and July of 2011 working with in Delhi, India.  AIM Abroad is a US Registered Community Interest Non Profit Company, affiliated with Global Orphanage Trust in India which provides housing in an orphanage for 10 girls as well as a tarped classroom to teach 50 local children. Global Orphanage Trust has provided the school children with clothes, school supplies, and a priceless education. Macy volunteered with the program's orphanage, working to teach the children English, performing general and special tasks and accompanying the children on outings as required by the project.

"Working with the students of Prakash Deep School, I learned the impact we are able to have is not measured by the level of English they achieve or whether or not they pass a test that deems them capable of continuing school. While those achievements are incredible, they are not the only indicators that we have changed a life. Being among the students and sharing my fears and dreams with them, I learned that bonds are created through honesty and how to be happy even in the most terrible situations.  I was truly inspired by the ability of the students to come to school every day and work towards a brighter future when everything around them discouraged this path. I now know that as a volunteer I don’t need to build a school or implement a new model for teaching for my time to have made a difference in the lives of those I’ve worked with. I can smile, share a story, let them know how incredible they are and how grateful I am to have them in my life."

Having postponed his fall 2010 trip due to a Federal Travel Warning, Bryce Lednar '11 spent the summer of 2011 in Kisumu, Kenya at St Clare's Orphanage and working in partnership with .  Joining Hearts and Hands works to improve educational, health and economic conditions for African orphans and their communities, by building schools, sponsoring health clinics, providing secondary scholarships, and nurturing sustainable development initiatives. In support of this mission, Bryce taught English and Math at St. Clare Orphanage in Kisumu, carried out business skills workshops with microenterprises, and met with scholarship students throughout western Kenya. Bryce also helped establish a rowing club in Kisumu whose athletes have ranked among Kenya's top rowers in regional and national regattas.

"I have never witnessed extremes as I did in Kenya. Opulence coexists with destitution, vitality with mortality, and opportunity with adversity. More importantly, I found that for Kenyans, strong relationships often transcend all of these things."

Ben Richmond '13 spent January and February of 2011 working with Teach Huaraz Peru in Huaraz, Peru. Teach Huaraz is a local, grassroots organization which supports the community of Huaraz by providing English lessons for children in local schools and educational programs for youth. Ben worked as an English tutor at a local language center and helped Teach Huaraz establish a 7-day pilot youth wilderness therapy program for at-risk youth. The wilderness therapy program consisted of classes about health, decision making, and outdoor skills, as well as an extended outdoor experience in the area’s surrounding mountains.

"I was proud to be able to help enhance Teach Huaraz's services to the community by laying a foundation for its wilderness therapy program."

Abby Suresh '12 volunteered at for eight weeks this past summer. After one week spent in the rural town of La Paz participating in coffee planting with members of a local farmers’ cooperative, she worked the remaining seven weeks in the impoverished barrio of La Primavera in Managua, Nicaragua. In Managua, Abby worked with other members of Compas to the Women in Action Center (WIA), building a backyard vegetable garden and a composting system; teaching English classes to local school age children; and running health workshops (‘charlas’) for women on topics like personal hygiene, menopause and nutrition. In addition, she helped repair the roofs of several of the Women in Action’s members’ houses and expand the test backyard garden at the WIA center to new gardens behind the women’s houses.

"Choosing to spend my summer volunteering in Nicaragua was a fantastic decision. As my first real time away from the comforts of US and my parents’ house, though, it was challenging at times. Despite the difficulties, I learned so many unsaid things about the Nicaraguan culture - most memorably the absolute friendliness and love Nicaraguans offer to anyone who even attempts to speak Spanish and understand their culture. Working toward the goal of bettering the lives of women by planting and caring for a garden and running basic health talks every week was more satisfying than any other summer job or internship I could imagine. Many things I saw and felt while in Nicaragua will always stay with me, but there is one that I will never forget. It was a line that many local women repeated to me and other volunteers on numerous occasions: “Every time we see you - you give us hope to go on.” The absolute honesty and passion behind that statement really touched me and made all of the struggles getting used to the culture seem negligible. I hope that this experience will be just beginning of my work in impoverished regions abroad."

Nina Scheepers '14 volunteered for the nonprofit in the Nkomazi region of South Africa. The Nkomazi is an impoverished and rural area in South Africa with a very poor educational system. ImagineScholar's mission is to provide supplemental education to the students with the most potential in the area to prepare them for university. ImagineScholar believes that education and success in university is the way to help these students pull themselves from the poverty in which they grew up in.  Nina worked with the fifteen selected Imagine Scholars - planning lessons, crafting activities, individual tutoring and helping with the behind the scenes runnings of the organization.

"My experience in South Africa was absolutely amazing, and I am so grateful to the Global Citizen grant program for making it possible. Returning to the country I grew up in was a great adventure, and my experience with ImagineScholar and their students was inspiring. The Nkomazi region of South Africa is under-resourced and therefore students have less access to educational opportunities. ImagineScholar works to close this gap by providing additional, after school resources for students to succeed in high school and prepare for university. The cohort of students I worked with was incredibly bright and motivated to achieve their dreams, and it was an honor to get to spend my summer with them."

This past summer Jamilah Gregory '11 worked with in Quito, Ecuador. Located in an underprivileged, industrial area of the city, Camp Hope provides attention, recreation, rehabilitation, education, spiritual support, and vocational resources to economically, physically, and mentally challenged children to enable them to attain their goals of independence and integration into society.

Working with children this summer, many who could not hear, speak, or feed themselves, let alone smile or hug me, made me confront the deeper issues surrounding my personal motivation to serve.  Do I serve for the rewarding smiles and hugs I get from the children I work with? Do I serve for the affirmation, praise, public recognition, or benefit of putting another item on a résumé? I quickly realized that my incentive to serve could not be rooted in personal satisfaction or gain.  I am motivated to serve by God’s love that I have experienced in my life. If I can be an agent of sharing that greater, sacrificial, unconditional love with others, even in the smallest way, then my service is worthwhile for me.
This internship at Camp Hope was one of the most incredible experiences I have had the privilege to enjoy.  It has profoundly impacted my future goals and career plans - affirming my desire to be a teacher and serve in underprivileged communities. I learned how to better teach students with special needs and accommodate students at different levels in the classroom and gained a deeper understanding of the workings of the unique strengths and faults of non-profits.

Kate Leifheit '12 spent January and February of 2011 working with in Quito, Ecuador. The Foundation supports marginalized elderly people, often living without the support of families, income of any sort, and government aid. FABC provides these people with the resources to better their own quality of life, addressing both health and social needs through programming. Kate volunteered with the center's medical staff, working in its free clinic and doing public health outreach (e.g. leading personal health workshops and making home visits).

"My experience at FABC taught me a great deal about Ecuadorian social issues, the day-to-day management of a grassroots nonprofit, and, perhaps most importantly, about myself and my passions. As result of my Global Citizens Grant in Quito, I can now clearly envision a future working with disadvantaged populations in Latin America, perhaps in the field of international public health."

Ruiqi Tang '13 worked with in Golok Autonomous Prefecture, China. Located in a rural Tibetan town, the SDG Home provides impoverished and disenfranchised girls with education, quality health care, and a supportive home environment. For eleven weeks, Ruiqi taught English and Geography, and coordinated connections between GSD Home and other organizations.

"Because I looked and spoke fluent Chinese, I was fortunate enough to overcome the various obstacles of being a 'foreigner' in a politically sensitive region. I was able to freely walk around town, hike mountains and enjoy an afternoon by the Yellow River among grazing yaks without making myself suspect to the local government. More importantly, my language skills enabled me to effectively communicate with the people there and establish stronger connections. Through my interactions with others, I learned about the complex, and often frustrating, process of starting a non-profit and expanding an organization. I learned that fearless ambition and talent just isn’t enough to address the immediate needs of a school. In the spirit of 'give and take,' we sometimes have to settle for what we have and redirect our focus to long-term goals."

Sheela Turbek '13 worked with in the Intag and Pedro Moncayo regions of Ecuador. FBU is a non-profit organization that partners with the Asociación Agroartesanal de Campesinos Agroecológicos de Íntag to recover ancestral agricultural knowledge and promote sustainable development in rural Ecuadorian communities by providing instruction in natural resource management. She spent one month in the remote village of Cazarpamba, assisting her host family in daily activities on their organic farm, and teaching classes in English and environmental issues.  The second month Sheela stayed in Tabacundo, an urban location closer to Quito, where she worked on and then ran an organic farm while her host family held their first official class on sustainable agricultural practices for members of the community.

"Volunteering in two very different communities in Ecuador allowed me to view rural Ecuadorian culture from multiple perspectives. All of the farmers I encountered shared an astounding work ethic and resilience. In spite of their limited prospect of improving their impoverished condition, they toiled with courage and willpower day after day for little pay in order to feed their families and provide their children with better opportunities. For my host mother, who had never before come into contact with a foreign volunteer, I represented living proof of the possibilities available through education. Seeing the tears stream down her face as I departed for Tabacundo made me all the more eager to use my education to increase disadvantaged communities' access to opportunities that I sometimes take for granted."

Sarah Glaser '11 worked with La Escuelita de Esperanza in San José, Costa Rica. La Escuelita is an after-school arts and literacy program in the Nicaraguan neighborhood of Proyecto Cristal. The school provides pre-schooling, homework help, and exploration of the arts.
While living in the community, Sarah taught remedial reading, remedial math, and art before and after school, as well as established art lessons for older children and English lessons for adults and students at night.

The semester she spent in San José radically changed her view of education, urban poverty, and children there.

"When I think of Proyecto Cristal, I can’t bring to mind any encompassing words or images. It was too diverse, too real. Instead, I think of a handful of normal moments: playing soccer on the muddy, slanted street with my students and their fathers, and sounding out the letters of the alphabet with a ten-year-old student who had never been able to attend school because he had immigrated illegally from Nicaragua. I recall cooking lasagna with a family while we watched a TV, and the sound of roosters crowing at dawn.
"It is hard to measure what one gives and receives in a volunteer experience. I can count the hours of teaching and the things I left behind, but the real value comes from the smaller moments."

Dhaujee Kelly '11 volunteered at The Parijat Academy in Guwahati, India. The school is located in a remote village called Pamohi. The primary goal of the is to provide free, equal education opportunity to children and families that are less fortunate and underprivileged.

Dhaujee taught English and Math to the students grades 1-8 and also doing artwork with the children that stay in the hostel here at the school. She tutored the older children in spoken English and computer skills. The children at the Academy speak only very basic, broken English.  With the skills that Dhaujee brought to them, they have been able to better themselves intellectually and progress through their educational experience.

"I find it very important to be able to give back to those in need because I too received help from others in order to succeed. I believe that the best way to help those that are less fortunate is to take part in their life to understand their struggles. Volunteering in India has been an excellent opportunity and experience.  I used my skills to help them and will use this experience to better myself."

Lakhina Ky '11 worked with Neary Khmer in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This non-profit organization focuses on educating women in the surrounding countryside about the importance of nutrition, health, and hygiene. The organization also works with community leaders to help set up their own personal community projects and goals through microfinancing.

Lakhina assisted all members of the organization. While she was in the office she help edit grant proposals, made a new pamphlet, and made Neary Khmer a website so that others around the world can have better access to Neary Khmer.
Lakhina often accompanied field workers to rural villages where she participated in village discussions and Village Associate's seminars about HIV/AIDS prevention, microfinancing, water quality monitoring, and the importance of maintaining a nutritious diet.

Back in the United States, she hopes to spread awareness about Neary Khmer, and other non-profit work in Cambodia.

"Volunteering in a different country, or even in a setting that is unfamiliar to you, is a wonderful experience. You not only learn about the struggles, joys, and lives of others, but you also learn about yourself and how you can affect the lives of others.”

Rosie Laflam '11 traveled to La Esperanza in the north west of Peru. For five weeks, Rosie worked with the Horizon House, a small non-profit organization founded by Manuel Silva, a longtime resident of La Esperanza. The Horizon House serves the children of La Esperanza, who are without access to supplemental educational programs.

In addition to teaching general English lessons each day, Rosie and Manuel converted Horizon House each evening into a study center open to the neighborhood, offering help to high school students with English homework, and adults hoping to use English to advance their career.
Rosie helped to design and implement an English curriculum to be taught at local schools with lessons focused on creativity and self-expression, using physical activity and personal experience to help students connect with what they learned.
Rosie was able to visit a number of local tourist sites, including the Chimu adobe city, the Huaca del Sol y de la Luna, and the vast asparagus fields that encompass Trujillo. She wandered through the Shaman's Market in Chiclayo, learned La Marinera-the national dance of Peru, and enjoyed sharing recipes and stories with the Silvas.

"Sometimes it was hard to see how teaching English was beneficial to the children of La Esperanza. I felt there were so many other things that I wanted them to learn about--the environment, democracy and global politics, how to take out a home-improvement loan. I tried to incorporate other ideas as much as possible, but the most rewarding lesson I taught was on feelings and emotions. Since that in lesson, just about all of the kids respond to "How are you?" not with "Very well", or "Good", but almost exclusively with "I am happy".
The time that I spent in La Esperanza was focused on the expression of personal experience--the joys and perils of living, no matter where, the lessons we learn, and the dreams we have for the future."

Sam Modest '09 taught last fall at the in Darjeeling, India. This English-medium primary school services the more impoverished families within the tea plantation district of Gorubathan.

Sam taught English to different age groups at the school, in addition to teaching the children Ultimate Frisbee. Sam also began a digital photography program at the school to provide the children with a form of non-verbal expression, with which they can share and converse with children in other parts of the world who are also learning photography. He is still working to build lines of communication between the Rainbow Academy and Woodside Elementary School in Topsham, ME, where he has been teaching photography to fifth grade students since the Fall of 2007.

"I feel so lucky to be given the opportunity to travel and meaningfully connect with a community that I would not normally have access to, through our mutual experiences of learning from, and teaching, one another."

Anirudh Sreekrishnan '12 worked with , an NGO, centered in Accra, Ghana. Heart for Humanity helps volunteers find local ways to give back to the different communities in Ghana. No matter the project, whether it is in a classroom or a hospital, the help the volunteers provide makes an impact in the community and offers an insight to a different culture.

Anirudh went to Ghana to do healthcare and medical work throughout the country. He spent one month in Walewale () working in a district hospital that oversees the city as well as the surrounding villages. Here he saw cases of malaria, candidias, dysentery, catter, STDs.
He then (Capital of the Volta Region) where he joined outreach missions with a local medical team to villages and communities all over the Volta Region. On these trips, he went with cataract patients to the hospital and witness a few dozen surgeries.
He spent his last month in a clinic that was undergoing accreditation from the National Health Insurance Scheme. Here he mainly worked on an advertising/updating campaign to help with the accreditation process.

"The ability to work in different places in the Ghana has allowed me to not only travel cross-country, but also experience a culture from many different perspectives. I can now say that I have biked through the hillsides of the Central Region, gone on Safari in the Upper Eastern Region, and climbed the tallest mountain in Ghana. When it comes to the animals- I have fed monkeys in the Volta Region, sat on crocodiles in the Upper Western Region, and was almost stampeded by wild hogs in the Upper Eastern Region. Last but not least, culturally- I went to church services every Sunday, attended a friend’s wedding, and went to a
Beyond the sights and sounds, it’s the people that make Ghana special. They make the country what it is- a welcoming and amazing place to spend a summer."

Kyle Dempsey '11 volunteered with El Hospital Escuela Oscar Danilo Rosales de la Ciudad de Léon in Léon, Nicaragua.  The hospital provides health care to Nicaragua's second largest city, Léon, as well as the surrounding rural towns and villages.  In addition to direct patient care, the hospital trains doctors and other medical professionals.

Kyle worked along side a general practitioner who is a fifth-year medical school teacher. Each day Kyle assisted her and other doctors a the hospital in any way possible.  His primary task was working on a mass vaccination effort that will immunize many of the region's rural poor who are unable to access health care.

"Leaving Nicaragua, I felt my experiences had far exceeded my expectations. These experiences did not really change any of my future career aspirations, though they definitely reaffirmed my fascination with medicine and the human body as well as the huge sense of well-being that I receive when helping others. My experience also opened my eyes to the poor healthcare conditions that exist in many countries. As a person who lived without healthcare, I easily empathized for the Nicaraguan people and plan to help them even more, when I am physician. In the short run, however, I also intend to help Nicaragua by raising awareness on campus and by coordinating efforts with the to direct more international volunteers and resources to Nicaragua."

Sara Holby '08 volunteered with International Community for the Relief of Starvation and Suffering (ICROSS) in Kisii Town, Kenya.  ICROSS fights poverty and disease in poor and marginalized communities throughout Kenya.  The organization employs the resources and capabilities of community members, thereby empowering them to take responsibility for change and development in their own lives.

Sara worked with ICROSS in a number of capacities.  Her primary work was developing fundraising streams and donor support for ICROSS.  She also worked to establish New World International, a program to link people around the world with those in poverty.  Additionally, she engaged in field work by talking with HIV/AIDS patients and community members throughout the Kisii District.

Eunsung (Elisa) Kim '10 volunteered with Pemón Health in Urimán, Venezuela.  The mission of Pemón Health is to demonstrate initiatives designed to provide sustainable improvements for the health of Pemón villagers.

Elisa lived in the indigenous community of Urimán, Venezuela, for nine weeks.  She mainly assisted the region's doctor with his medical work, but also participated in Pemón Health programs and activities.

Sean Morris '10 worked with Grupo Fenix in Managua, Nicaragua.  Grupo Fenix contributes to the wellbeing of rural communities by creating an awareness of sustainable lifestyles through technical and cultural exchange, promotion, and research in the field of renewable energy.

Sean work for and did research for members of a solar energy cooperative in the rural village of Totogalpa, Madriz, to create and implement projects focused on sustainable development, including the building of solar ovens, solar dehydrators, biodigestors, and the establishment of permaculture.

"While we might be tempted to think that humility means giving more than you receive – for me - truly knowing humility meant realizing that it is possible to receive more from a community of poor uneducated farmers than I could give back with a lifetime worth of “volunteering.” I am deeply indebted to them, and to all of my mentors: Nicaraguans, teachers, friends, and family alike - all people who saw a promise in me that I have come in part to realize."
