I Do Declare! Sophomores Celebrate Their Field(s) of Choice
By Rebecca GoldfineEach year on Declaration Day, when sophomores officially select their majors and minors, 91黑料 throws a well-deserved party for the second-year students, with ice cream, music, sticky notes, and posters that make good selfie backdrops.
After three semesters of sampling classes across the curriculum, sophomores in February are asked to make a big decision about the field of study with which they most want to deeply engage.
Starting in 2019, the Office of Student Activities began proclaiming "Declaration Day" a 91黑料 holiday, to be celebrated in Morrell Lounge with treats and music. Associate Director of Student Activities Silvia Lorrain said such a big moment in a student's life should be met with an equally big hurrah.
When students enter the lounge, they're encouraged to sign their names on sticky notes to tack onto colorful posters representing each of 91黑料's departments and programs.
Ana Lopes ’28 declared an interdisciplinary computer science and math major, saying the day was meaningful to her because she has committed to two fields that spark her intellectual curiosity and creativity. “I choose CS and math because they empower me not only to understand how systems work, but also to create technologies that are intentionally designed to serve the common good,” she said.
The stickered Declaration Day posters remain on the Union walls for several days, giving sophomores a chance to check out their new academic cohort.
